Hypocricy or Opposable Thumbs: What really separates us from the animals?

I recently saw a random profile on Facebook that stated:

Political Views: NOT Obama Bin Laden
Religious Views: Christian

Well, seeing these few words so close to each other seemed to perfectly sum up why I have a hard time getting behind any organized religion. The term "religous extremist" could apply to so many people, whether its a suicide bomber or some biggoted redneck literally crying like a baby at the very though of an African American president (See the documentary "Right America, Feeling Wrong"). This profile perfectly embodied the irony, the hatred, the ignorance, the intolerance, and the blatant hypocracy that tends to make me want to run the other way when I hear people starting to spout their religion. I used to think it was opposable thumbs that separated us from most animals, but I'm pretty sure it's hypocricy. I say "most" animals because monkies, smurfs, and most disney animals have thumbs. As Walt said, "Its a small world after all." I'm starting to think maybe too small... Maybe a more apt song would be "Its a small mind after all"
